I have already announced on social media that I'm going to write a blog post about sourdough bread. If you follow me on Instagram, you might know how much I like to eat sourdough bread. Today I would like to share why that is and what sourdough bread is exactly.
Of course, a delicious recipe is waiting for you again. This week I have a salty and sweet variant for you, which you can use as a spread for your sourdough bread.
What exactly is sourdough?
I learned that sourdough is one of the oldest ways bread is made. Sourdough is a fermentation of grains. You may be familiar with how healthy and nutritious fermented food is for us. We may know the best-known form of fermentation from sauerkraut or kimchi. Fermenting takes a lot of patience and time. It is the same with sourdough bread. In order to bake a sourdough bread, you need a starter. This starter has to ferment for several days. The starter is made from flour and water that contain live yeast and bacteria.
Sourdough bread is usually made with the same flour as traditional bread. The important difference: the fermentation process improves the nutritional value of the bread. In addition, sourdough is often easier to digest because it contains the important pre- and probiotic bacteria that are very good for our digestion. As a rule, sourdough bread also contains less gluten than conventional bread.
Since I suffered badly from irritable bowel syndrome in my twenties, I completely eliminated gluten from my diet for a few years. I hardly, if at all, eaten bread during this time.
When I learned during my training as a nutrition coach how healthy and well fermented foods are for us, I also started regularly adding fermented foods to my diet. My digestion thanked me.
As a bread lover, I was thrilled when I learned more about sourdough bread and that it is made through fermentation. I started adding sourdough bread to my diet and never once had digestive problems. Hence my love for sourdough and I enjoy my bread almost every week, whether with avocado, hummus, vegan cream cheese or a delicious healthy chocolate spread.
If you want to enjoy your sourdough bread too, you can now buy it in almost every bakery.
I have two wonderful spreads for you, which you can easily and quickly replicate, so that you too can enjoy your nutritious sourdough bread.
